The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) is a considerable intergovernmental organization was established in 1951. Its primary goal is to enhance cooperation among its member countries to protect plants from pests and diseases (including invasive plants). <\/p>\n
The organization is responsible for developing and promoting science-based plant protection measures, coordinating efforts to prevent the introduction, and spread of pests and diseases, and facilitating the exchange of information and expertise between National Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs).<\/p>\n
The EPPO has 52 member countries, works closely with several international organizations, such as the European Union, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, and the International Plant Protection Convention. <\/p>\n
Based on EPPO convention (last amended of the Council in 1999), which published for the establishment of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization contains following aims:<\/strong><\/p>\n In addition to its scientific work, the EPPO also plays an important role in the exchange of information and expertise between its members. The organization holds regular meetings and conferences and provides a platform for its members to share their experiences and best practices. <\/p>\n These EPPO recommendations provide basis for harmonization of phytosanitary standards for member countries. The EPPO has focus on works closely with its members to develop and implement measures to prevent the introduction and spread of non-indigenous organisms. <\/p>\n Another area is focusing on developing and promoting of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. IPM can ensure sustainable and cost-effective approach to pest control. <\/p>\n These EPPO recommendations provide basis for harmonization of phytosanitary standards for member countries.<\/p>\n EPPO has a key position on plant protection products (PPP) authorization, not only in the European Union but also in the EPPO geographical area. Before introduction new regulation of the European Union EPPO had well developed general and specific standards for authorize plant protection products. <\/p>\n SANCO\/10055\/2013 Guidance document describes efficacy composition of core dossier and national addenda submitted to support the authorization of plant protection products under Regulation (EC) No 1107\/2009. Standards by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) for the efficacy evaluation of plant protection products (PP1) describe the conduct of trials carried out to assess the efficacy of plant protection products against specific pests. <\/p>\n General and specific standards are addressed to all concerned party, official registration authorities, public institutes or private firms carrying out such trials. In Europe, they are now considered as reference documents in Commission Regulation (EU) No 545\/2011 of 10 June 2011, implementing Regulation (EC) No 1107\/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the data requirements for plant protection products. <\/p>\n Other key elements of registration (i.e. toxicology and residues) are not part of EPPO\u2019s work but are addressed by other international bodies.<\/p>\n Hungary became a member of EPPO in 1960, it has been an active participant since then. Hungary’s membership in EPPO has allowed it to benefit from the organization scientific expertise and the exchange of information with other member countries. It has also contributed to the organization scientific publications and databases and has provided experts to participate in EPPO’s working groups and committees. By working closely with other member countries, Hungary has been able to benefit from the organization scientific expertise and exchange of information, and to contribute its own experiences and best practices. Our colleague, Istvan Dancza filled out national representative position on behalf of Hungary. He supported with his experiences EPPO Invasive Alien Plants (IAS) Panel activities from IAS panel established in 2002 to 2012. <\/p>\n Looking to the future, the EPPO will continue to play an important role in promoting sustainable plant protection practices and facilitating international cooperation among its members. All member states are facing new challenges and threats to their crops and vegetation, the organization will be a valuable resource for scientific expertise and exchange of information.<\/p>\n In conclusion, EPPO as an intergovernmental organization plays a vital role in promoting sustainable plant protection practices and facilitating international cooperation among its members. Hungary’s membership in the organization has allowed the country to benefit from the EPPO’s scientific expertise, exchange of information, and best practices. EPPO will continue to be an invaluable resource for developing effective strategies and promoting international cooperation.<\/p>\n In addition to the topics mentioned previously, there are several other areas of plant protection that have great importance to EPPO and its member countries. These include the different zones within the organization, the importance of resistance management, and the use of good agricultural practices (GAPs) to minimize the risk of pests and diseases. <\/p>\n EPPO has divided its member countries into several different zones based on their geographic location and the pest and disease risks that they face. These zones include the Mediterranean, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe, and North Africa. Each zone has its own unique challenges and priorities when it comes to plant protection, and the EPPO works closely with its members in each zone to develop strategies and solutions that are tailored to their specific needs. <\/p>\n Hungary, which is part of the Central and Eastern Europe zone, faces a range of different plant protection challenges, including the spread of invasive species, the management of plant diseases, and the protection of agricultural exports. Through its membership in EPPO, Hungary has been able to collaborate with other countries in the zone to share information and expertise, and to develop coordinated strategies to address these challenges.<\/p>\n Another important aspect of plant protection is the use of good agricultural practices (GAPs).
